mixing it up

Top (old)/Skirt (Skies are Blue)/J.Crew Factory tights (here)/Madewell Shoes (here)/J.Crew necklace (love this one - on sale too!)/Rebecca Minkoff Sunglasses (here)

I found these polka dot tights at J.Crew factory on super sale last week and decided to mix them in with a few items in my closet of similar colors that were in need of a little attention.

Takeaway Tip: mixing prints is easier if you keep the color palate simple.

outdoor fun

top (Madewell-old)(similar)/BB Dakota Coat (here)/J Crew Factory Scarf (available in stores)(similar)/Edyson Sloan Skinny Jeans (similar)/boots (old)(LOVE these)/Marc by Marc Jacobs bag (on sale here!)/Rebecca Minkoff Sunglasses (here)
After spending more than a few winters in Boston I have amassed quite a coat collection, which makes bundling up more exciting. I've been working on my hat and scarf collection the past couple years because I've decided the and easiest (and most non-threatening) way to mix prints and textures is with outerwear. Fur, plaids, polka dots, houndstooth, stripes - the crazier the better!

double up

Dress (old)/J.Crew Top (here)/J.Crew Belt (old)(similar)Madewell Shoes (here - so comfortable!)/Rebecca Minkoff Sunglasses (here)/J.Crew bag (similar)/Michele Watch (here)
I've had this dress for a few years now and could never quite seem to make it work in the summer because, well, it's short, poofy and sleeveless. The amount of draftiness just felt a bit inappropriate for a 33 year old mom of two. However, this dress is in a whole other league when I throw on a heavy weight peplum top with a waist defining belt. Suddenly the short length is SO appropriate and the poof in the skirt is perfect.

casual sequins

sequin top (old)(love this one)/Utility jacket (similar)/Mother denim (here)/Nine West boots (similar)/Bauble Bar necklace (here)/J Crew Clutch (similar)/Rebecca Minkoff Sunglasses (here)
This shirt has been hanging out patiently in my closet for quite a few years now and finally got it moment to shine! I bought the shirt for a dressy work function and haven't worn it since; mostly because black sequins scream too dressy.  Putting together today's outfit and blog post I learned two important lessons: heeled black knee high boots are a fabulous option for skinny jeans and your favorite sequin top you bought for that "fancy" event can be worn out for your next date night by pairing with a trusty utility jacket and skinny jeans. Give it a try and thank me later...

white jeans year round

J.Jill Sweater (old)(similar)/Jeans - buy your white jeans now - they're all on sale (similar)/Gap Peacoat (old)(similar)(LOVE this moto one)/shoes(LOVE these)/J.Crew Clutch (similar - great price!)/hat (old)(similar)
I've seen a few people sporting their white denim recently and thought, "why not give it a try??" If you're up for the challenge trying pairing your white jeans with a wintry print sweater and your favorite peacoat. And if you're really feeling festive, throw on a hat.

Fall Florals

Top (similar)/Gap Denim Jacket (similar)/Ann Taylor Pants (here)/Nine West heels (LOVE these)/Rebecca Minkoff Sunglasses (here)/Gap Clutch (here) (love this one!)
There's something really refreshing about a bright floral pattern during a chilly (and grey) fall day. I plan to make good use of this shirt this fall and even during the winter. The bold pattern can be worn alone or if you prefer to avoid the dry cleaners on a weekly basis (like me,) you can layer the shirt underneath a thicker layer (that's machine washable) and let the collar "pop." Just try to keep your kid from drooling on the collar.

leather is faux-real

Skirt (Similar)/Top (love this one!)/Rebecca Minkoff Sunglasses (here)/Gap clutch (here)
I sure do hope this leather trend is here to stay for a while. I found this faux leather skirt a few months  back and have found so many ways to wear it. It can be dressed up with a fancy top or dressed down with a t-shirt or casual button down like i've done here. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to pull off this trend but I'm convinced a leather skirt might be the perfect way for anyone to dive in. If you go the faux route, just be careful the material doesn't look too much like vinyl.

Who can resist a pair of red patent leather pumps with a bow on them? Not me! (obviously) Paired with my favorite pair of skinny jeans and a black faux leather jacket, these red hots take center stage.

pencil me in...

top - Piperlime (similar)/Ann Taylor skirt (here)/Shoes (old)/Madewell clutch (here)/Rebecca Minkoff Sunglasses (here)/Bauble Bar necklace (similar)
When I used to work in the business world I wore pencil skirts ALL the time. They're so chic, classic  and flattering. Sadly for me, there's very limited space in my closet for pencil skirts as a stay at home mom. This one, however, I could not pass up. It's got faux leather paneling, which gives it an edge and makes it perfect for date night. If your work environment is anything beyond casual this is a must have for your wardrobe and if like me, you love pencil skirts and dressing up, this is a must have for everything outside of running around with kids :)

winter whites

Skirt (Nordstrom)(similar)/top (old)/Jacket (on sale!)/naughty monkey shoes (similar)
Rebecca Minkoff Sunglasses (here) gap Clutch (here)
This skirt is on serious repeat...and the play will continue. It's the perfect color and texture for year round wear. To make it fall appropriate I paired it with some cool weather staples -  a faux leather jacket and my favorite hounds tooth pumps.

mixing it up

Nordstrom top (old)(love this one)/Leggings (gap)/belt (target)/Dolce Vita boots (here)/vest (Marshalls)/clutch (gap)/Rebecca Minkoff Sunglasses (here)

This ensemble is a little bit of everything - flannel, fur, leopard and combat boots. I don't typically wear any of the above types of pieces and yet when I throw them all on at the same time it works. I think.

not your average brocade

tee (banana republic)/Skirt (piperlime)/tights (gap) (similar)/booties (Aldo)/Deux Lux clutch (LOVE this one)/Rebecca Minkoff Sunglasses (here)

I ordered this skirt on Piperlime when it was on final sale for $12. Yes. $12. I'm not usually one to jump on final sale purchases because I'm usually one to have buyers remorse but the price was right.... and it was $12 well spent. The end.

s.a.h.m. fashion

Old Navy dress (on sale)/Gap denim jacket (similar)/knee socks (here)/Frye boots (here)/Rebecca Minkoff 5 Zip mini (here)/Rebecca Minkoff Sunglasses (here)/Crow Steals Fire Necklace (here)

For me, one of the hardest adjustments to staying at home with kids, was not having an excuse to get dressed up and wear heels 5 days a week.  I love clothes and shoes (obviously.) I was (and often still am) at a loss for how to dress fashionably appropriate to stay at home with a toddler and a baby everyday.

Over the knee socks with low or no heeled boots are a great way to spice up your look. Wear this trend with an easy cotton dress, a mother's necklace and voila! you've got stay at home mom style.

a fancy skirt by day

Old Navy top (here)/Skies Are Blue skirt (no longer available)(LOVE this one)/Aldo Booties (here)/Rebecca Minkoff Sunglasses (here)/Deux Lux clutch - old (want this one)/Michele Watch (similar)/Crow Steals Fire necklace (here)

I have quite a few skirts in my closet including a few I imagined I would wear for "date night." A couple kids later date night doesn't come around as often as it used to.   So, in an effort to get more use out of my existing wardrobe, I managed to tone down what could be considered a fancy skirt into a fancy day skirt. A sweatshirt and booties later...I think this could work as a dress up day for a stay at home mom.

ps. the secret to making a longer sweatshirt work under a light weight shirt is...spanx! you're welcome.

mama's new bling

Check out my new bling! Baby girl and I are both pretty happy about it. I'm not a huge collector of costume jewelry (no judgement please.) I prefer my jewelry to carry a personal meaning or story behind it so it's an understatement to say I was excited to receive my new mothers necklace from Crow Steals Fire. I'm in love with it because  a.) it's beautiful b.) it gets me lots of compliments and c.) it has my kids' birth dates stamped on it so I should never have  a problem remembering them.  Seriously, every mother should have one. And if you're not a mother, Crow Steals Fire has something for you too - I've got my eye on the pendant necklace which can be personalized to your favorite sports team (or I think it would look amazing with initials.)

I could go on and on (and on some more) about what an amazingly talented designer and creator Donna (the owner) is but you should probably just check out her website yourself (here.) She has a TON of great things to offer. I've laid out a few of my favorites below. You should know that Donna makes each personalized piece herself by hand so she does have a 4 week turn around on those items but at the bottom of this post I've listed some great independent locally owned shops in and around St. Louis that carry ready to buy items by Crow Steals Fire including make your own pendant necklace.

St. Louis Retailers of Crow Steals Fire:
E.L. Riley (Kirkwood, Mo)
Serendipity Gifts (Kimmswick, Mo)
Local Lucy's (Belleville, Il)
I Am What I Am (St. Charles, Mo)
